Betcha someone told you you're a tad unreasonable Round about the time you had your rivals shot Petra always said I bring out the worst in people But you know sometimes the worst is what they want I recall national Sunday law I'm appalled - national Sunday indifference Michael had a come on like a good time Charlie But it was never clear if he would follow through There are certain times you gotta say you're sorry Even if we all know that it isn't true And that's called national Sunday law I recall national Sunday law I recall national Sunday law I'm appalled - national Sunday indifference Kelsey had a healthy interest in prosthetics You certainly couldn't say that she was ever bored She wasn't much to look at but she was so athletic And the bird couldn't sing, but man did she perform And that's all national Sunday law I recall national Sunday law I'm at fault national Sunday law I'm appalled - national Sunday indifference

Oh consensus, publicists and your mother The explorers got it wrong, there ain't nothing to discover You can show me the door but I ain't leaving I got new age tricks just beyond conceiving Everybody's got a past, you wanna share it like a present Don't think you're in a caste but you're nothing but a peasant No pointless digressions, no deathbed confessions Just new age tricks and old time obsessions Lizzy'd seen a lot, but she didn't know what she was in for 'Cuz the last rodeo didn't go like all the others before And she wished that she would disappear, and she wished the she would go But there were certain new age tricks even she didn't know So defenseless in the arms of a new mistress He could scarcely make the gesture, he could hardly protect the witness Say he went crazy or absent without leave Or pulled some new age trick he had hidden in his sleeve No one even asked so why are you testifying? No one's hiring, so why are you even applying? Had to go all the way downtown just to bail you out Those new age tricks couldn't even save you now

Resting with your feet up on the cusp of millions Excited for the meet up with the will o' the Williams Is there ever going to be enough to go around And baby, it's all gone now When the pills are running low and the money's coming slow, maybe throw yourself another banquet The clients come and then the clients go, but soon you're bound to be vacant And baby, it's all gone now Drinking it all in, 'cuz the future is back then You committed yourself to the original sin You act the fool, but don't know you're funny Whatever's eating you is also making us hungry I'll never forget the last day that we met You gave me a blindfold and a cigarette Screw up at the free clinic, cheap pop and an epidemic, and there's no conscience round in this Russian roulette But don't think twice - it's all over now You had the privilege, you had the pride You sat self-satisfied while friends of mine died You couldn't see the trees, you couldn't see the forest You thought you saw the poor, you were a poverty tourist Every single lie you tell in this stupor You think you're being wry, music's got no future And baby, it's all gone now (no future) And baby, it's all gone now (no future) And baby, it's all over now (no future for you)

You said before you knew what it was like to be poor - or maybe just poorly dressed I was always trying to make a good time out of life, with the empress But now I've been asleep at the switch, oh honey, somehow I got marooned I recognized that somebody had to do something soon I was a rock and an island, somewhere near the Cote D'Ivoire I could not deny the crabs, but baby, they ain't here no more So many tricks that you trade on, so much makeup to cover the pall I gather you were here and gone, but rock and roll just can't recall You said that she was someone that you used to know, or maybe someone you used I was down on my knees at the crossroads so I suppose I got no excuse The scales have fallen from my eyes dear - now I think I understand So you can fuck on water - that don't make you a miracle man I was a double agent on a submarine down on the Isle of Wight I had the intelligence but I never really was all that bright So many tricks that you turn on You gotta walk before you can crawl You might've been my Vietnam But rock and roll just can't recall Now these days I shiver shake when I walk, and you can't bear to see me dance My life's an outtake of an experiment and I blew the advance But what do we do with Rod the mod? You don't look so good yourself Maybe you've still got the moves and the hooks but you ain't got the health I raided and pillaged down on Sunset and I woke up on the beach I was a cocaine rhythm machine, now the good life was in reach So many tricks that you take on, and you're left against the wall Drop the needle and ramble on 'Cuz rock and roll just can't recall Rock and roll just can't recall....

It's a strange, strange world we live in, Master Jack You taught me all I know and I'll never look back It's a very strange world and I thank you, Master Jack You took a colored ribbon from out of the sky And taught me how to use it as the years went by To tie up all your problems and make them look neat And then to sell them to the people in the street It's a strange, strange world we live in, Master Jack You taught me all I know and I'll never look back It's a very strange world and I thank you, Master Jack I saw right through the way you started teachin' me now So some day soon you could get to use me somehow I thank you very much and though you've been very kind But I'd better move along before you change my mind It's a strange, strange world we live in, Master Jack You know how I feel as if I'll never come back It's a very strange world and I thank you, Master Jack You taught me all the things the way you'd like them to be But I'd like to see if other people agree It's all very int'resting the way you disguise But I'd like to see the world through my own eyes It's a strange, strange world we live in, Master Jack No hard feelins if I never come back You're a very strange man and I thank you, Master Jack You're a very strange man and I thank you, Master Jack

Grover was the kind of guy who never really washed up well Always caught up in a bind, always playing some kind of show and tell Are we not men? Are we mere clients? Not even a single act of non-compliance Count backwards from ten and then always say never again Paul tried to know me but there was just way too many cooks Told me it’d trickle down but then that trick never really took I was tested in Durham, I was printed in Raleigh By the time that I stopped driving I was somewhere in Missouri I wasn’t raised in a pen and I always say never again Inside and outside are much the same places, provided you know your way through the door The black hats, the white hats, the heels and the faces The center of a city with no center core, go go! I took a meeting I was talking means and ways Someone told me that the chair was unconscious for days Down and distance, time and score I tried fighting McClellan’s war Now I’m thinking like Sherman and I always say never again Outside and inside are much the same places Provided you know your way through the biz I searched the room and I went through the paces I still don’t know where Lola is Barry was the kind of bloke who always left his blinkers on I believe that he’d turn any way as soon as he felt drawn I knew Rodrigo and Rodrigo knew Mike and Mike assured me that Barry’s doing alright And they say the house always wins and I always say never again Always say never baby, always say never baby, always say never again

A long night of the shakes All fits and starts and turkey vultures What a difference a year and seven seconds makes in the last days of the monoculture Extended Stay America Durham I panicked in the cereal aisle I bought the pitch and I took the serum I implicated myself at trial I busted that fat righteous fucker You know what they say – bustin’ makes me feel good He was eating off my page, he was copying off my plate I lost my bearings but I gained a conscience I finally knew the con games from the content I finally knew the face of the comptroller On these last worst days of the monoculture Now it’s policy shocks and tinfoil hats And a Picasso on eBay that has to be a counterfeit A stranger once told me that when life hands you lemons, you should probably quit He swept the nation like a dance sensation While we watched the dead drop at the metro station You can’t be too strong and you can’t be too sure On these last waning days of the monoculture

Grandpa was a trainwreck Daddy had it rough Don’t you think three generations of imbeciles is enough? In the twilight of the tsars no one gets nostalgia right anymore It took a sixty-pound sack of colonial gems And a two-pound purse of mescaline Born and raised by way of committee Made a prince in slush fund city Won’t be happy until everything’s his Welcome to the slush fund kids Before another second passes Before we go a minute further I’ll need to see your corporate badges And your donation numbers Ulysses stranded in the bitter night spend the whole past decade freezing Penelope said, “At least you’ve got a purpose in life – buddy, I just sit here weaving” Free from guilt, inured of pity The little boy king of slush fund city When there’s not enough to eat Keep ‘em away from slush fund street At daybreak I take to a solitary place and I cross out the night before I spent time by the Michigan lake I spent time by the Michigan shore Someone gave a word of advice – put it out to deep water and then wait for the catch If you’re gonna do it once, then you’re gonna do it twice That’s what the experts all suggest Burned and razed and scorned and pitied Bring ‘em all here to slush fund city No satisfaction until they’re deceased Drag ‘em all down to the slush fund street

about

“Rock & Roll Just Can't Recall” finds the Paranoid Style at its most focused, furious and tuneful. From the full-bore garage assault of “National Sunday Law” to the glam-strut of “New Age Tricks” to the poison pen letter to Washington DC's most despicable actors “Slush Fund City”, the songs are controlled rage and blistering wit. Not so much protest music as a sweeping referendum on a political culture awash in hypocrisy and grotesque corruption, “Rock & Roll Just Can't Recall” is a piece with the scalding satire of Armando Iannucci and the righteously hilarious broadsides of Samantha Bee.
